“Songs of the Sea” and “The Magical World of Sentosa” are two unique musical fountain shows in the world that are performed in the sea, visible from the shores of Sentosa Island in Singapore. The high-tech component of these nightly performances is particularly appreciated by a sophisticated audience of more than 2,500 people each night.

When the prestigious show organisers contacted CRYSTAL with the mission of animating the seascape as a daytime extension of the nighttime water show, they expected a perfect artistic and technical mastery of the discipline from their service provider.

Understanding a client’s needs, anticipating an audience’s expectations, and transforming a site’s constraints into creative challenges are among CRYSTAL’s key skills. In this case, it was a question of singling out a site and designing an original device capable of permanently indicating the show’s location.

CRYSTAL’s technical teams devised the “signal” jet, an 80-metre-high water geyser, rising proudly above the sea in a straight line, immediately visible from the shore: ready to be snapped and uploaded to instagram!

CRYSTAL’s engineers developed smart buoyancy calculations to ensure that the water beam would remain straight despite the waves’ oscillation. In addition, given the remoteness of the installation, the propulsion of the jet at such a height had to work optimally using as little energy as possible. In order to make the project operational, as developed by the CRYSTAL design office, numerous adjustment tests were carried out at sea,  thus refining the jet’s propulsion curve and assembling and operating small pumps that are reliable in all weather conditions.

The result is a highly aesthetic engineering achievement that completes an attraction as eternal as water itself, as fragile as a dream, and as intangible as an idea.
